A #spoonie 's Perspective on Spoonie Movies

Updated: Jan 30, 2020

Hey !

So,today I will be writing some reviews of the #spoonie [ the online community of people with chronic illness(es)] movies within the last few years, seeing that a couple of months ago, I finished Five Feet Apart. I have seen Wonder, Everything,Everything and Midnight Sun. I need to eventually see The Fault In Our Stars, I might have skimmed through the book but, I'm not sure. I will mainly talk about Five Feet Apart but, I'll briefly mention the other movies.

As you may or may not know, I do not have any of the diseases in these movies but, it's still great that these movies have been made. If a movie director wants to make a movie with someone with ulcerative colitis, hit me up ☺.

I can kind of relate to some of the scenes in the movie. The main characters have their oxygen tubes throughout the movie[as pictured below] and the minor experience I have with that is, using them for my colonoscopies. I can previously[since I use to take oral medications] relate to crushing the pills into soft foods like they did with their CF[Cystic Fibrosis ] pills in the pudding.

There is a quote that Stella says,

"This whole time, I’ve been living for my treatments, instead of doing my treatments so that I can live. I want to live. It’s just life, Will. It’ll be over before we know it."

That is an interesting statement. With probably any chronic illness, you can get consumed and forget to live a fulfilling life instead of focusing on your illness[es].

I can't relate to this personally but, I know some of the IBD patients I follow, can relate to having to use feeding tubes. Stella was featured using it and in the behind the scenes, the director said, he had a CF nurse, to make sure it was in the correct placement on the body.

I didn't realize one of the main character's, was an actress[Haley Lu Richardson] that I saw in another movie, The Edge of Seventeen which is also a great movie.I was disappointed because, I think they didn't include the scene pictured below even though it's one of the promo images. Be prepared with the tissues if you cry over movies easily. It's one of those movies that keeps you on the edge since, the main CF patients get into risky situations where they could die and someone does [ok no more spoilers :P].

CF patients have mixed reviews about this movie but, it seems pretty accurate based on what I know about the movie[liked mentioned before]. The movie was consulted by a CF Foundation called the Claire's Place Foundation. Another interesting thing was that, I remember Claire dying but I didn't know that she was monitoring the movie and I remember the chronic illness community mourning over her. Now onto the next movies!

This is Midnight Sun [below]. It is similar to 5 Feet Apart because Katie[Bella Thorne], has a condition called Xeroderma Pigmentosum and isn't allowed to be in sunlight but, falls in love with a guy who she doesn't want to tell that, she isn't allowed to be in the sun. They have fun with each other but, eventually part ways. I enjoyed this movie.

This is Wonder [above]. It was about a little boy that has Treacher Collins Syndrome which caused him to have a medical facial deformity. He was home schooled until 5th grade and then, kept experiencing bullying when he went to school. At the end of the year, he was given an award for standing out.I loved this movie.

This is Everything,Everything [below]. It was also similar to 5 Feet Apart because Maddy[Amandla Stenberg], falls in love with the boy who lives next door but, isn't allowed to go out of her house due to a disease she ended up not having called SCID. This was an interesting twist at the end but, it was a great movie.

Thanks for reading this post, let me know your thoughts below or in my social media posts if you have seen any of these movies, especially if you belong to the chronic illness community.
